Department Mission Statement
The Department's mission is to shape and sustain a peaceful, prosperous, just, and democratic world and foster conditions for stability and progress for the benefit of the American people and people everywhere. This mission is shared with the USAID, ensuring we have a common path forward in partnership as we invest in the shared security and prosperity that will ultimately better prepare us for the challenges of tomorrow.

The Department of State, the first executive department to be established, advises the President and leads the country in foreign policy issues. The State Department negotiates treaties and agreements with foreign entities, and represents the United States at the United Nations (USA.gov).

NMC Department of state

At National Model Congress, the Department of State is staffed by the Secretary of State and State Ambassadors. The State Department has two primary functions at National Model U.S. Congress: advise the president on legislative matters regarding foreign affairs and serve as a representative of the National Model U.S. Congress program for recruitment and marketing. NMC Secretary of State
The Secretary of State, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Executive Committee of NMC, is the President’s chief foreign & external affairs advisor. The Secretary carries out the President’s foreign/external affairs policies. The NMC Secretary of State oversees the NMC State Ambassadors. Additionally, as a member of the executive branch, the Secretary participates in meetings to report progress of the State Ambassadors to the President and Vice President as well as contribute to the development of the President’s platform. At the annual conference, The Secretary of State serves to advise and assist the President, especially in legislative matters regarding the State Department.

NMC State Ambassador
The State Ambassador, appointed by the NMC Secretary of State with the advice and consent of the Executive Committee of NMC, is the chief recruitment officer for an assigned geographic region. The State Ambassador is responsible recruiting new individuals as well as school delegations from an assigned geographic region. At the annual NM Conference the State Ambassador serves as assigned legislators.
